On Collecting: A Video Series from AIPAD

Watch the latest videos in AIPAD’s “On Collecting” series to hear three perspectives on building your photography collection – and why dealers are invaluable in this process.
Joel Smith, Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography for The Morgan Library and Museum, discusses photography curation and the benefit of working with dealers. Joel shares his unique perspective on the role of the curator – to “farm” the medium of photography and look for pieces that will stimulate those in other fields.
Private collector Christine Symchych gives expert advice on building your own collection. She explains the value of attending an event like The Photography Show for taking in the range of photography on the market – and the first step for developing your own visual library.
Finally, Makeda Best, the Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography at Harvard Art Museums, discusses the role of photography within the context of the arts, and how photography dealers play an important role in educating the public and curators about the themes and trends that are driving the art form forward.
One of the best places to gain perspective on fine art photography, meet dealers, and see a wide range of photographic work is The Photography Show. The Show takes place at Pier 94, April 5-8, 2018 and tickets are on sale now.
